Afghanistan’s Female Street Artist

Shamsia Hassani is a Painter who teaches art at Kabul University, she is also a graffiti artist who ventures into the streets of Afghanistan to create murals that often depict women in traditional clothing joyfully posing with musical instruments. She uses the walls of abandoned buildings damaged by bombs as her canvas. She is giving women in Afghanistan a voice.

As a woman in Afghanistan, it is dangerous for her to walk on the streets, but she takes the risk and ventures out with her cans of spray paint to create art.

She says, “I want to colour over the bad memories of war on the walls and if I colour over these bad memories, then I erase war from the people’s minds. I want to make Afghanistan famous because of its art, not its war”.
